This course is designed as an introduction to Common Law and intends to give students a broad understanding of the characteristics and functions of the English and American Legal System. Students will gain knowledge of the sources
of Common law and the system of courts and tribunals.
The best way to study law and learn Common Law is to
read cases. Although technically the word “case” refers to the lawsuit itself, here, we use it to refer to the judge’s written opinion. Case law is an important source of law in common law countries. A great deal of legal rules are based solely on decided cases. Therefore, learning to read and to analyze cases is essential to understand how common law system works and what we can learn from it.
